Empowering your students to successfully complete their research project

Supporting students in completing their first independent research project can be both rewarding and challenging. This webinar explores practical strategies to boost student confidence throughout the research process. Drawing on our experience supervising undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations, as well as co-convening an undergraduate dissertation module, we developed a companion guide to support social science students in navigating their research journey.

In this session, we introduce key features of our new book, Completing Your Research Project, and its accompanying online resources, offering insights into how they can be used to structure supervisory meetings effectively. A distinctive aspect of the book is the emphasis on student wellbeing, with dedicated sections on managing research-related anxiety and knowing when to let go of a project. Student voices are also crucial to the book, as we reflect on real student questions—ranging from broad concerns to specific challenges—and share examples from past research projects. By sharing our experiences and practical tools, we aim to support instructors in fostering student confidence and making the research process more manageable for both students and supervisors.
