Online Learning and Methods Instruction

Remote learning did not start with the Covid 19 shutdown. However, that experience drew attention to the potential, and the challenges, of online teaching and learning.

Interested in Online Higher Education? Attend the February 19, 2024 online summit convened by Safary Wa-Mbaleka. The Online Higher Education Summit is a global event that will bring together educators, education leaders, researchers, education technology experts, and education policymakers who work in or with higher education institutions.

The editor of The Sage Handbook of Online Higher Education, Safary Wa-Mbaleka, is joined by contributors in a lively roundtable about teaching and learning online. They discussed online teaching and learning in a global context, and highlighted the particular concerns for those teaching research skills. The discussion was facilitated by Janet Salmons, Manager of the Sage Research Methods Community and an experienced online professor and doctoral supervisor.

Some of the questions discussed include:

  • Some people were compelled to teach and learn online during the pandemic, but of course distance and online learning were used for decades before that crisis. How did COVID-19 affect online education in higher education?

  • What are the different types of online learning and why they are important?

  • What do professors or instructors need to know when considering how best to teach research in the online environment?

  • What should online students keep in mind when preparing and conducting their research studies?

  • Your new Sage Handbook of Online Higher Education includes a section about global online education. What are some of the key similarities and differences that professors should keep in mind when teaching in multinational programs?

  • What new technologies or teaching approaches are most intriguing to you right now? What is on the horizon?
